"Classroom" Participation

Active participation is essential for your own learning outcomes and for the course as a whole. Your participation mark is a significant component of the final mark.

20% of your participation mark is given if you show up for the first class. This is silly, but I do need everyone in the room to be able to organize this course.

For the remaining 80% I will evaluate a mix of potential contributions to the class
  • contribution to quiz questions.
  • regular attendance in class-sessions;
  • substantial contribution to discussions;
  • active participation on the course mailing list[1]. Such participation can include
    • questions about the material;
    • helpful answers and comments;
    • hints and pointers to interesting and useful resources or ongoing discussions.

Note that the participation mark is not calculated from a formula, but is a holistic appraisal aimed to integrate over many different aspects in a non-artifical manner. If you are truly active in the course, I will know and you will do well.

Notes

  1. You can find more hints on the effective use of mailing lists in the Netiquette page.
